Writing a mini-book? Here is how you get someone to actually buy it and then read it.
You’ve got to make them a killer promise.
This promise is made with your title, subtitle, and cover.
The title grabs attention, but your subtitle seals the deal, and the cover confirms the genre.
A compelling subtitle clearly states the promise to your readers, making them eager to dive in.
Here's how to make it work:
Why Subtitles Matter
Your subtitle is more than just a tagline; it's usually the clear promise to your readers. It tells them exactly what they will gain from reading your mini-book. In a world where attention spans are short, a great subtitle can make all the difference.
Example:
Title: "Unlocked" Subtitle: "The Secrets to Work-Life Balance for New Dads"
The title wasn’t clear by itself, but with the subtile you’ve set clear expectations and directly addresses the needs of a specific audience.
How to Craft an Engaging Subtitle
Identify the Core Benefit: What will your readers gain from your book?
Example: For a book on quick meals for dads, the core benefit might be time-saving recipes that are easy to prepare.
Be Specific: General statements don’t capture attention. Be precise about what your book offers.
Example: Instead of "Healthy Eating Tips," use "Quick and Healthy Meals for Busy Dads: 15-Minute Recipes to Keep Your Family Nourished."
Use Active Language: Engaging subtitles often use action verbs and convey a sense of urgency or excitement.
Example: "Transform Your Parenting: Simple Techniques to Connect with Your Kids."
Real-Life Application
When I was crafting the subtitle for my mini-book on the myths our society tells about money, I focused on the specific benefit and the target audience:
Title: “The Misleading Money Mantra”
Subtitle: “How Chasing Money Is Holding You and Your Business Back From the Life of Your Dreams”
This subtitle clearly states what the reader will achieve and who it is for (someone who owns a business) making it easy for potential readers to see the value.
Your Turn!
Crafting a compelling subtitle isn’t just a finishing touch; it’s a strategic element that can drive your mini-book’s success.
