Hey Revenue Writers,
There are four journeys every author must go on to turn a book into a business.
We don’t just write books to share ideas.
We write books to build a pipeline.
To grow a movement.
To write revenue into existence.
But most people underestimate what they’re walking into.
They think publishing the book is the starting line or even the goal. In reality, it’s only the second of four journeys. Without a roadmap, it’s easy to stall. To get overwhelmed.
Or worse, quit before you ever see results.
So let’s break down the Four Journeys of a Revenue Writer and what it really takes to move through them.
1. The Journey of Positioning
What is this about?
Before you ever write a word, you have to position yourself, your book, and your business around a clear, compelling category.
If readers don’t understand who you help, what problem you solve, or why you’re different, your book becomes background noise.
One client I worked with wrote three solid books. But his positioning was so unclear, I finished one and thought he was advocating for something he was actually trying to eliminate. That’s how easily your message can misfire.
What does success look like?
Clarity.
My client and I are working together clarifying his book (rewriting it) saying plainly what he does, why, and how.
He said he got more clarity in the first week of us working together than he’s had in 3 years of business.
You need to know who the book is for, what it’s trying to change, and how it aligns with your business. Your book is a direct extension of your positioning.
What does it require?
Conviction.
You must believe you’re offering something different and be willing to claim it.
2. The Journey of Publishing
What is this about?
This is where you sit down, write the book, and ship it.
For most people, this is the entire mountain. But in reality, it’s just one leg of the trip. You’re packaging your life experience and perspective into something that solves a real problem. Not just something interesting.
Something useful.
What does success look like?
You publish a tight, focused mini book, 5,000 to 15,000 words.
That book delivers transformation, solves somoeones problem. It isn’t just a bunch of ideas.
What does it require?
Courage.
To ship it when it’s not perfect.
To publish despite your fears. To stand behind your voice, even if someone leaves a one-star review.
3. The Journey of Promotion
What is this about?
Once your book is out, you’ve got to find your first 1,000 readers.
Most authors stall here. They're exhausted from writing and don’t know how to spread the word.
You don’t need a massive marketing budget. But you do need consistency. This is a long game… months, not days.
What does success look like?
Your book is in the hands of 1,000 people.
You’re building momentum. You’re showing up. You’re starting to see belief form around your message.
What does it require?
Consistency.
You can’t promote a book for a week and expect results.
Push for a year. Learn what works. Then scale it.
That is how you complete the promotion journey.
4. The Journey of Profiting
What is this about?
This is where everything turns into a system.
You’ve built attention.
Now you create outcomes.
If your book doesn’t show people how to reach you, how you can help, or what comes next, you won’t get paid, even if the book is great.
You need a lead magnet.
You need a follow-up email sequence. You need to get people on calls, into offers, or inside your funnel.
What does success look like?
You’ve built a pipeline. 1,000 readers in, $10,000, $20,000, etc. out. (or whatever your numbers are) Do it once, you can do it again.
That’s the Revenue Writer flywheel.
What does it require?
Clarity in your offer.
Systems that support you.
And a mindset that obsesses over results for others, not just content.
These aren’t just steps.
They’re four separate journeys.
Each one stretches you.
Each one demands something different.
And each one, when mastered, gives you a new level of leverage.
You’re not just an author.
You’re not just a creator.
You’re a Revenue Writer. And this is the map.
Where are you on the journey?
Hit reply or drop a comment, I’d love to hear which journey you're in, and what you need most help with right now.
Chris
P.S. If you need someone to walk you through each step of the journey I’d love to help. Through my Book to Business Coaching I walk along the business builder and their team (if they have one) at whatever stage they are at. Helping them get as fast as possible through each journey.
If you are interested in getting that help I’d love to talk.
It’s all about finding and connecting with your favourite people.
